| SAN FRANCISCO - The National Football League on Thursday asked a judge to toss out a lawsuit filed by former players who allege team officials gave them powerful painkillers and other drugs to keep them on the field without regard for their long-term health. The judge ordered the lawyers to contact the National Football League Players Association to determine its position on the lawsuit.A spokesman for the NFLPA didnt respond to an email and phone inquiry Thursday.Most of the one-hour hearing in San Francisco was taken up by debate over whether the NFL or its individual clubs are responsible for the medical care of the players.Its the club that has the responsibility to train the doctors, NFL attorney Dan Nash said.The former players attorney, Steve Silverman, countered that the NFL has a financial interest to keep players on the field and encouraged a free-wheeling drug distribution culture.The NFL knew full well these drugs were being provided, Silverman said. There was a pharma free for all.The judge didnt indicate which way he would rule. He said he wanted to hear from the players union before making a decision on whether to toss out the lawsuit.Several prominent former players have publicly joined the lawsuit, including Marcellus Wiley, Jim McMahon, Richard Dent, Keith Van Horne and Jeremy Newberry.The lawsuit represents players who played as far back as 1968.The former players say that NFL physicians and trainers routinely provided narcotics and other controlled substances on game days to mask the pain. The lawsuit says many of the drugs were dispensed without prescriptions.The former players argue that they were never warned about the dangers of the drugs they were given and only recently discovered the potential harm they face from ingesting so many painkillers. Kershaw struck out 12 during seven dominant innings, Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 6-1 in Game 1 on Thursday night. The big-money Dodgers havent won a World Series championship since 1988 -- by far their longest dry spell since the franchise moved from Brooklyn to Southern California in 1958. If the ace left-hander keeps pitching the way he did in his first post-season win, the Dodgers might have a chance to go all the way again. "When you have an opposing pitcher on the mound who is as good as Kershaw, theres not a lot of room for error," said Atlanta starter Kris Medlen, knocked out in the fifth. Kershaw, who had a 1.83 ERA during the regular season, limited the Braves to Chris Johnsons run-scoring single with two outs in the fourth. That just seemed to make the pitcher mad -- he struck out Andrelton Simmons to end Atlantas only serious threat, and the next five Braves hitters for good measure. Appropriately, Kershaw finished up by striking out the side in the seventh, matching his season high for Ks. He allowed just three hits. "Hes the best pitcher in baseball," Gonzalez said, "and he showed it tonight." Atlanta struck out 15 times in all. Ellis rolled all the way to the wall for an RBI double, putting the Dodgers ahead 2-0 on a play that an outfielder with even a modest amount of experience probably wouldve grabbed fairly easily. "I thought there was a couple plays that we could have made," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I think that the guys were just a little amped up." Just to add to Atlantas outfield woes, Justin Upton wasnt even close on a sliding attempt when Ellis doubled down the right-field line in the fourth. He wound up scoring on Mark Ellis two-out single, stretching the lead to 5-0. Kershaw struggled with command of his fastball, but worked more off his breaking pitches and made it look easy against the free-swinging Braves. "Strikeouts just kind of happen," he said. "Its not something Im trying to do. Im just trying to get outs as fast as possible." Gattis, one of Atlantas most pleasant surprises during the regular season, had a miserable night in his post-season debut. He ended the second by somehow getting doubled off first on a lazy fly to short right field. Dan Uggla watched it all from the dugout. The three-time All-Star was left off the Braves playoff roster after a dismal season in which he batted just .179 with a franchise-record 171 strikeouts. Uggla wasnt the only big-money flop for the Braves, who had to juggle their outfield because of B.J. Uptons season-long slump.
